Qatar has experienced a remarkable 300 percent increase in electric vehicle sales over the past year, a surge largely attributed to the extensive charging infrastructure built throughout the country in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The network of fast-charging stations installed across Doha and surrounding areas during the tournament preparations has given consumers unprecedented confidence in the practicality of making the switch to electric transportation.

The World Cup legacy infrastructure includes over 800 public charging points distributed across stadiums, fan zones, hotels, shopping centres, and major transportation corridors. Following the tournament, the government invested an additional 500 million QAR to maintain, upgrade, and expand this network, ensuring it serves the long-term needs of a growing EV-owning population. Today, Qatar boasts one of the highest densities of EV chargers per capita in the entire Middle East.

The surge in sales has been supported by an increasingly diverse range of electric vehicles available in the Qatari market. Local dealerships now offer over 40 different EV models from manufacturers including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BYD, Hyundai, and Kia. The availability of both affordable and premium options has broadened the appeal of electric vehicles beyond early technology adopters to mainstream consumers.

The government is capitalising on this momentum with additional purchase incentives announced for 2026, including a 10 percent rebate on the purchase price of electric vehicles, reduced customs duties, and preferential electricity tariffs for home charging installations. The Ministry of Transport has also launched a public awareness campaign highlighting the environmental and financial benefits of EV ownership. Qatar national vision targets electric vehicles comprising 15 percent of all registered vehicles by 2030.
