Oman has unveiled the Gulf region largest solar-powered electric vehicle charging facility in Muscat, setting a new benchmark for sustainable transportation infrastructure in the Middle East. The innovative hub, located at the intersection of the Sultan Qaboos Highway and the Muscat Expressway, features 100 individual charging points powered entirely by an adjacent 5-megawatt solar farm, creating a truly zero-emission refuelling experience.
The facility incorporates a mix of charging speeds to accommodate different user needs and vehicle types. Forty ultra-fast chargers deliver up to 350kW, capable of adding 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes. An additional 40 fast chargers operate at 50 to 150kW for standard charging sessions, while 20 AC chargers serve vehicles that will be parked for longer periods. The hub can service up to 400 vehicles per day at full capacity.
Beyond charging infrastructure, the facility has been designed as a comprehensive rest and service destination. A modern climate-controlled lounge offers comfortable seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, and refreshment areas where drivers can relax during charging sessions. An adjacent vehicle service centre provides tyre checks, windscreen cleaning, and basic EV maintenance. A cafe and small retail area complete the amenities, transforming what could be a mundane wait into a pleasant experience.
The project demonstrates how GCC countries are uniquely positioned to combine their abundant solar energy resources with electric vehicle infrastructure to create truly zero-emission transportation solutions. Oman receives over 3,400 hours of sunshine annually, making solar power an exceptionally reliable and cost-effective energy source. The facility excess solar generation during off-peak hours is stored in a 2-megawatt-hour battery system and fed back into the national grid, generating additional revenue that improves the project economics.
