The latest industry data compiled by the International Council on Clean Transportation reveals that electric SUVs have become the most popular EV segment worldwide, accounting for a remarkable 45 percent of all new electric vehicle sales globally. This trend represents a significant shift from the early days of EV adoption, when compact hatchbacks and sedans dominated the market, and reflects the growing maturity and diversification of the electric vehicle industry.

Consumer preference for larger vehicles with higher ground clearance, more interior space, and enhanced versatility has driven manufacturers to prioritise SUV models in their electric lineups. The crossover and SUV body style offers practical advantages that resonate with families and suburban drivers, including larger boot space, elevated seating positions, and the ability to handle varied road conditions.

The most popular models driving this trend include the Tesla Model Y, which alone accounts for approximately 25 percent of all electric SUV sales, followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and the recently launched Kia EV9 seven-seater. Premium manufacturers have also found strong demand for electric SUVs, with the BMW iX, Mercedes EQE SUV, and Audi Q8 e-tron performing well in their respective market segments.

The trend is particularly pronounced in the Middle East, where SUVs have traditionally dominated the automotive market due to terrain conditions, lifestyle preferences, and the need for spacious vehicles suitable for families. In the UAE specifically, electric SUVs account for over 65 percent of all EV registrations. Manufacturers are responding to regional demand by developing models with enhanced cooling systems, sand-resistant components, and extended warranty coverage designed for hot climate conditions.
