Self-Driving EVs Begin Pilot Programme in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has launched an ambitious pilot programme for autonomous electric vehicles on select routes in the capital, positioning the emirate at the forefront of the global smart mobility revolution. The fleet of 50 self-driving EVs, developed in partnership between the Department of Municipalities and Transport and technology company Bayanat, will operate in dedicated lanes across three carefully selected corridors connecting key destinations.

The initial routes cover a combined distance of 45 kilometres, linking Yas Island entertainment district with the Abu Dhabi International Airport, the Corniche waterfront promenade with Saadiyat Island cultural district, and the financial centre on Al Maryah Island with residential communities on Reem Island. Each vehicle is equipped with over 30 sensors, including LiDAR, radar, and high-resolution cameras, enabling safe navigation through complex urban environments.

During the six-month trial period, the autonomous EVs will offer free rides to residents and visitors, collecting valuable data on passenger experiences, traffic integration, and system reliability. The vehicles operate at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour and can accommodate six passengers each. A remote monitoring centre staffed by trained safety operators oversees all vehicles in real-time.

Early feedback from passengers has been overwhelmingly positive, with satisfaction ratings exceeding 90 percent in initial surveys. The programme combines cutting-edge autonomous driving technology with zero-emission vehicles, demonstrating Abu Dhabi commitment to sustainable innovation. If the pilot proves successful, authorities plan to expand the fleet to 500 vehicles by 2029 and introduce autonomous bus services on major transit corridors.
